I had never read a Judy Moody book before until my son brought this one home from school last year.The title, picture, and blurb were captivating but I was still not sure what to expect.
As my son & I snuggled up and started reading it only took a few pages for us to become Judy Moody fans.
Judy Moody Saves the World touches on many green issues; from rain forest destruction to endangered species, from saving trees to recycling. It also includes lots of facts (something near and dear to my son's heart) and puts the issues into a perspective that young children can easily understand and relate to.
Megan McDonald, the author, cleverly includes humor into the mix; Judy wishing she could recycle her brother, putting the “made from the rain forest” toilet plunger on the table, Judy trying to live in a tree. All things that made my son giggle (he is an 8 yr old boy after all).
"Look around you—at home, in school, on the playground—not just in Science class. How can we help the planet? How can we make the world around us a better place? We can each do our part. All it takes is one person to make a difference.”
"One person! If all it took was one person, then she, Judy Moody, could save the world! She knew just where to start. With a banana peel."
After reading that passage my son started listing the ways he “saves the world."
* Using the back side of paper to write & draw on
* Letting his little sister wear his old Halloween costume
* Making cereal boxes into books
* Recycling and composting
I was impressed with the short list of items that he had quickly come up.
Reading books like Judy Moody Saves the World is an enjoyable way for children to learn why we are trying to live a “greener” lifestyle.
It teaches them that they too can make a difference, one plastic bottle at a time.
I can't wait to see what Judy Moody books he brings home this year!

Thanks for sharing this read - I think I'll look for it the next time we go to the library! My kids enjoy the "Flat Stanley" books by Jeff Brown and I thought "Stanley in Space" had a great environmental overtone without beating it over the kids heads. Looking forward to the read!
I love his attitude! I'm glad he's enjoying Judy Moody; she's a great character. Tell him to keep reading; the more he learns, the better he'll be at saving the world.
